For many centuries, believers have been taught that there will be a future, literal resurrection of the dead.  Long dead cells scattered in oceans, urns and fecal matter (as well as the earth) would be reassembled and reanimated into a glorified body. 

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

The Thessalonians were concerned about the righteous who had "gone on before."
